March 15 marks six years of conflict in Syria. The armed conflict, which began as pro-democracy protests before escalating into a full-scale civil war. Here are some key stats from UNICEF about how the violence is affecting millions of Syrians:
- 8.4 million Syrian children, inside and outside the country, are in need of humanitarian aid
- 1.75 million Syrian children are no longer in school
- 2.5 million Syrian children are living as refugees or are in search of safety
- 4.9 million Syrians are refugees; half are children
