Impact Report: Seeds of Peace Wed, 19 Apr 2017 16:27:28 -0700
Happy Hippies was founded with the mission of empowering young people to change the world. That’s why we’re supporting programs with Seeds of Peace to equip the next generation to become leaders, peacemakers and community activists. These leadership development programs specifically focus on underrepresented or minority youth across various identities like race / ethnicity, gender, sexuality, nationality, and religious beliefs.

Here are some key highlights of our work together this past year:

We launched a new camp program for 100 American youth leaders representing diverse backgrounds and training them to mediate conflict and to address current challenges such as LGBTQ rights and immigrant rights in their communities. Since camp, the youth leaders have self-organized meetings in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago to develop social action plans in response to policy changes that target immigrants, faith communities, LGBTQ individuals and other minority communities.

We expanded programming in the Middle East, helping to bring together youth from conflict zones and train them to become community leaders. Happy Hippie funding provided Mediation and Negotiation Training for 43 Seeds in Jerusalem and a leadership program in Cyprus for 30 participants from Israel, Palestine, Egypt, India and Pakistan.

We're excited to continue our work with Seeds of Peace and to see the ongoing impact in the lives and communities around the world! Home of Hope was founded by Agogo Chipeta in 1992. When Agogo was 14, his parents passed away and he moved in with his older sister. Although she was very young herself (16), she did everything she could to make sure he was loved and that he could complete school. Inspired by his experience, Agogo founded Home of Hope with a $6 donation and just 18 kids. Many of you have supported the #NoDAPL movement in response to the Dakota Access Pipeline threatening water sources, ecosystems and sacred lands, and now we need to continue our support in order to protect the natural resources, wildlife and communities currently at risk.

In 2014, the $4 billion Dakota Access Pipeline project was proposed, designed to transport as many as 570,000 barrels of crude oil daily from North Dakota to Illinois. By early 2016, most permits were granted and construction began by Energy Transfer Partners. The pipeline travels underneath the Missouri River, the primary drinking water source and sacred burial grounds for the Standing Rock Sioux, a tribe of approximately 10,000 with a reservation in the central part of North and South Dakota. As a result, Native Americans have united at the center of opposition against the Dakota Access Pipeline as the risk of leaks and ruptures at oil and gas pipelines could damage the tribe’s water supply. Environmental activists have joined the opposition because the pipeline will contribute to man-made climate change by building up the country’s oil infrastructure.

While construction continued rapidly along most of the pipeline routes, it had been halted temporarily and locally several times by civil disobedience and legal action. Despite the temporary block on construction ordered by the Obama Administration in September 2016, the federal court intervened to allow the project to proceed.

President Trump issued an executive order that allowed for the Army to expedite the approval process for the Dakota Access Pipeline. Despite lawsuits filed by the Standing Rock Sioux and Cheyenne River tribes to halt the final piece of the pipeline, the construction company anticipates that oil will begin flowing this week (March 13th) or next (March 20th). In the wake of the February 22nd...Read More Honoring Elizabeth Taylor's Legacy of Activism Thu, 23 Feb 2017 11:37:01 -0800
In honor of what would have been Elizabeth Taylor’s 85th birthday on February 27th, The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation released a short video today to celebrate her legacy. The video reflects on one of the most unforgettable figures of the big screen, diving into Elizabeth Taylor’s unique and multifaceted fame, and the path that led her to become one of the most powerful activists of all time.

We are so honored that our Founder, Miley narrated the video, celebrating Elizabeth Taylor's commitment to changing the world and using her platform to advocate for some of the most marginalized populations. Elizabeth Taylor's example inspires us to continue speaking out as a new generation of activists.

Thanks to the activism of Elizabeth Taylor and many others, there has been great progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS, but the fight isn't over. Happy Hippie and Miley are passionate about ending HIV/AIDS, and each one of us can do our part to reduce new infections, confront the stigma, and make sure that people who are living with HIV/AIDS have access to the care and treatment they need to live long, healthy lives. Read their letter below and add your name at

Dear Texas Leaders,

Please know that the creative community is watching Texas, with love for all of its people and for its contributions to music, art, and culture. We love Texas and its people so much. Among us, we have played shows in towns and cities across the state. For many of us, playing live in Texas for the first time has been a life-altering experience. We are amazed by the culture and community of Texas.

We are deeply troubled by the current legislation that would target the LGBTQ community in Texas.

Texas Senate Bill 6 (SB6) would criminalize the simple act of a transgender person using the restroom – a denial of basic human dignity. Other legislation being considered in Texas would force teachers to out LGBTQ students to their parents – a violation of the trust built between kids and educators. Still more bills in the works would strip Texas cities of their LGBTQ-inclusive nondiscrimination protections or nullify marriage equality. Bills like these are poison, a barrier between Texas and its future.

Transgender and gender non-conforming young people are already subjected to bullying and harassment. Can you imagine the message these bills send to children – the message of “that child is different, that child is dangerous”? Transgender and gender non-conforming young people also already face higher rates of family rejection and homelessness, mental health issues and suicidality, and they already find it more difficult to find work and housing. How much more can you punish them for living honestly and openly? Keep in mind that these kids are some of the bravest and wisest young leaders that we have.

It is up to you whether...Read More Miley and Happy Hippie at Women's March LA!
